■ なぜ5-Gear Evoなのか
◉ 5ギア化による、より滑らかなトルク伝達
プラネタリーギアを5個配置。
荷重をより多くのギアへ分散させながら、左右輪の回転差に応じて連続的にトルクを伝達します。
クラッチプレート式LSDのような明確なON/OFF感ではなく、
アクセル操作に対して自然にトラクションが立ち上がる。
軽量なSevenだからこそ、この滑らかさが大きな武器になります。
◉ 軽イニシャル機構を追加
Planetary Gear LSDの弱点になりやすい、片輪が極端に低荷重となった状態。
5-Gear Evoでは軽いプリロードを与えることで、低荷重状態からでもLSDが仕事を始めやすいセッティングとしています。
ただし、クラッチ式LSDのように強いイニシャルトルクで常時左右輪を拘束する思想ではありません。

The Caterham Seven is all about lightness, direct feedback and precise response to even the smallest change in weight transfer.
The 5-Gear Evo was developed around one simple principle:
Improve traction without taking away the character of the Seven.
Evolved from our original 3-gear design, the new 5-gear planetary configuration distributes load across five planetary gears and provides smoother, more progressive torque transfer.
A light preload system has also been incorporated to improve response when one driven wheel becomes lightly loaded.
The result is an LSD designed to work with the Seven — not against it.

■ Why 5-Gear Evo?
◉ Five planetary gears for smoother torque transfer
The 5-Gear Evo uses five planetary gears to distribute load and continuously transfer torque in response to differences in wheel speed and available traction.
Unlike a traditional clutch-type LSD, there is no aggressive transition between “open” and “locked”.
Instead, the differential progressively responds as torque is applied.
Traction builds naturally with the throttle.
In a car as light and responsive as the Caterham Seven, that progressive behaviour makes a real difference.
◉ Light preload for low-load situations
Torque-biasing differentials can become less effective when one driven wheel is extremely lightly loaded.
The 5-Gear Evo addresses this with a carefully controlled light preload.
Its purpose is not to permanently lock the rear wheels together.
It simply provides enough internal resistance to help the torque-biasing mechanism begin working when wheel load becomes very low.
It doesn't need aggressive lock-up.
It only needs enough preload to get the differential working.
That is the philosophy behind the 5-Gear Evo.

■ Designed to preserve the Seven's handling
An overly aggressive LSD can change the balance of a lightweight rear-wheel-drive car.
Under power, excessive locking can increase the feeling of the rear axle pushing the car forward and may promote power-on understeer.
The 5-Gear Evo was developed with the opposite objective:
Keep the steering response. Keep the balance. Add traction.
On corner entry, the Seven remains light and responsive.
As the throttle is applied from the apex, torque is progressively distributed across the rear axle.

■ Simple maintenance
Unlike a conventional clutch-plate LSD, the Planetary Gear LSD does not rely on a stack of friction plates as its primary locking mechanism.
This means routine clutch-pack replacement and regular breakaway-torque adjustment are not part of normal maintenance.
We recommend a GL-5 SAE 140 gear oil.
The design also avoids the characteristic low-speed chatter commonly associated with aggressive clutch-type differentials.
